He is past President of the American Economic Association, the International Economic Association, the Indian Economic Association, the Econometric Society, and the Development Studies Association. He is a Fellow of the British Academy, of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and of the Econometric Society. In 1990 Professor Sen received both the Giovanni Agnelli International Prize for his research on ethics of modern society, and the Alan Shawn Feinstein World Hunger Award for his work on understanding and preventing world hunger. Professor Sen was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Economics for his work on welfare economics.
